Have you considered what this can do to your body?
Ergonomic design is critical in the workplace to prevent injuries. In fact, musculoskeletal injuries are responsible for 34% of all lost-workday illnesses and injuries.
Check out what ergonomics are and the top workplace ergonomics tips.
The term “ergonomics” refers to the process of arranging a workspace so that it properly accommodates an individual. Proper ergonomics in the workplace can eliminate pain and injury that may lead to you needing chiropractic services. By improving such things as office equipment, lighting, and so on, performance and productivity can be improved.
Now, let’s look at the top five ergonomic tips for the workplace.
When you’re looking to improve ergonomics in the workplace, your chair is a great starting point. The ideal chair will have adjustable seats and backs, lumbar support, and should allow you to sit with your feet on the floor.
Legs should be at a 90-degree angle. For shorter people, a footrest may be needed. It’s important to realize that office chairs aren’t one size fits all, so depending on a person’s height, a different chair may be needed.
I’m sure you remember your mom telling you not to slouch. She knew what she was talking. Proper posture at the desk is vital. Poor posture can cause back pain and strain.
Your hips should be as far back into the chair as possible while sitting. Your back should be supported by the chair back. Elbows should stay close to your body while your shoulders, head, and neck are relaxed.
If you’re reaching for the keyboard or mouse, you’re too far away. You should also stay aware of your posture when talking on the phone. It’s easy to keep the phone in between your ear and shoulder, but this should be avoided. Instead, consider a headset.
Let’s talk lighting. You may be wondering what lighting has to do with office ergonomics. If there isn’t proper lighting, this could lead to moving your body in uncomfortable positions to see better.
Bad lighting can also lead to eye strain. Screen glare and placement of the computer should be adjusted accordingly.
When you’re creating a stable workspace, you should ensure that the desk doesn’t wiggle. Adjustable desks are great because you can adjust the height for proper placement of the feet, back, neck, shoulders and arms.
Sit to stand workstations are a great option. This allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day to keep your body warm.
Regular breaks are absolutely necessary. Every hour, you should take a 5-10 break. Get up and take a walk around the office. If you feel stiff, do some yoga stretches to loosen up.
It’s so important to improve your workplace ergonomics. Preventing injury should be a priority for yourself and your coworkers.
